AI character chat apps: who can use them and what they allow
Six of the 8 character apps we checked are for adults only; Character.AI allows users from 13 but says it is removing open-ended chat for under-18s, and Talkie from 14. Character.AI and Talkie prohibit sexual content, while Janitor AI, Kindroid and SpicyChat allow it between adult characters. Age checks range from a date of birth to a video selfie or ID.
Character chat apps let you talk to an AI that plays a person, a fictional hero or a companion of your own design. Their rules differ more than their apps do: some are open to teenagers and filter everything, others are adults-only and allow what the first group bans. We read the terms and guidelines of 8 well-known character apps and set the rules side by side.

How we checked: we read each app's own terms of service, community guidelines and help pages on the date above and quote them word for word, without creating accounts. Grok's companions are not included because xAI's pages do not describe them. Some pages, such as Janitor AI's terms, showed an automated-traffic check; we used the app's other pages. Rules differ by country. We update the table every month.

How to read the table
Account says whether the app's own pages require one. Minimum age is the age in the terms, with any rule for younger users. Age check is how the app says it confirms your age, and the sexual-content column summarizes its rules. The last field quotes the app word for word.
Teen-friendly apps filter more
Character.AI allows users from 13, or 16 in the EEA and UK, and says it is removing open-ended chat for users under 18. Talkie allows users from 14. Both prohibit sexual content in their community guidelines, for adults as well.
Adults-only apps and what they allow
Replika, Chai, Janitor AI, Nomi, Kindroid and SpicyChat say they are for adults only. Janitor AI, Kindroid and SpicyChat allow sexual content between adult characters, and SpicyChat asks for explicit characters to be marked NSFW. Chai's safety page says its models refuse sexually explicit material, while its app terms mention adult-oriented content.
How apps check your age
The checks vary from a date of birth at sign-up (Nomi) or a confirmation of age (Replika) to a video selfie with ID as a fallback (SpicyChat). Kindroid estimates age from behaviour on free accounts and asks flagged users for a selfie or ID through Yoti. Janitor AI checks age through k-ID in Australia, Brazil and the UK.

The last row is this chat. It needs no account to talk to a character, and its terms are for adults only. Fiction with invented adult characters is allowed; anything sexual involving a minor, real or fictional, is banned without exception.

What is the minimum age for Character.AI?
Its terms say 13, or 16 for users in the EEA and UK. Character.AI also says it is removing open-ended chat with its characters for users under 18.
Which character AI apps allow adult content?
Among the apps we checked, Janitor AI, Kindroid and SpicyChat say they allow sexual content between adult characters. Character.AI and Talkie prohibit it.
Do character AI apps verify your age?
Some do. Character.AI describes an age-assurance model, SpicyChat a video selfie with ID as a fallback, Kindroid a behaviour-based estimate with Yoti for flagged users, and Janitor AI k-ID in some countries. Others ask only for a date of birth or a confirmation.
Do I need an account to chat with an AI character?
Replika and Nomi say you must register, and Talkie requires an account for some features. This chat needs no account.
